You may be eligible for more Medicare benefits than you realize.

Who is Eligible for Medicare?

Medicare eligibility commences at the age of 65 for most individuals. However, it’s important to note that those who have been receiving Social Security disability benefits for a minimum of 24 months are also eligible. In addition to these primary criteria, there are several other factors that determine eligibility for receiving Medicare benefits.

If you happen to be under 65 years old, you can still qualify based on the following conditions:

US Citizenship or Permanent Residency: You must be a US citizen or a permanent resident who has continuously resided in the United States for at least five years.

Permanent Disability: You should be permanently disabled and have been receiving Social Security disability income benefits for a minimum of 24 months.

End-Stage Renal Disease: If you have end-stage renal disease, you are eligible for Medicare benefits.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): Individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, are also eligible for Medicare benefits.

Medicare Part A Eligibility:

At age 65, you qualify for Medicare Part A coverage at no cost if you or your spouse have worked in the United States for a minimum of 10 years. In case you haven’t worked for a full 10 years, you still have the option to purchase Part A coverage. If you are already enrolled in Social Security benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Part A when you turn 65. Expect to receive your Medicare card in the mail approximately 4-6 weeks prior to your 65th birthday.

Medicare Part B Eligibility:

Similar to Part A, the eligibility requirements for Medicare Part B coverage are the same. However, one crucial distinction is the presence of a monthly premium. It is essential to pay close attention to enrollment dates to avoid any late fees.

Medicare Part C Eligibility:

Medicare Part C, also referred to as Medicare Advantage, is available to individuals who are enrolled in both Parts A and B and reside within the plan’s service area.

Medicare Part D Eligibility:

Medicare Part D, commonly known as a prescription drug plan, is available to those who are enrolled in both Parts A and B and reside within the plan’s service area.
